Orlando City Soccer Club has officially appointed Gonzalo Rodríguez as its new Director of Health & Performance, joining the team as it concludes its 2024 regular season and gears up for the Audi 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs.
Advancing Health and Athletic Performance
In this key position, Rodríguez will work closely with Dr. Craig Mintzer, the chief medical officer and head orthopedic surgeon, alongside Dr. Justin Mullner, the head primary care sports medicine physician at the Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic Institute. Together, they will manage the strategic and operational aspects of the medical, physical performance, nutrition, and sports science departments for the men's team.
Rodríguez will also lead initiatives designed to enhance physical capabilities, reduce injury rates, and promote a strong club culture. His role includes exploring innovative technologies that can boost athlete performance, ensuring Orlando City Soccer Club remains a leader in sports science.
“This was a comprehensive and meticulous search in which we assessed numerous top-tier candidates globally,” stated Luiz Muzzi, EVP of Soccer Operations and General Manager at Orlando City. “Ultimately, Gonzalo’s vast knowledge and international experience perfectly align with our club’s objectives and culture. We’re excited to have him on board as we move forward with our plans in Orlando.”
Rodríguez expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “Since arriving in Orlando, my experience has been overwhelmingly positive. This is a young club eager to develop. I hope that my expertise with elite teams and high-level competitions will help us achieve new milestones.” He highlighted the significance of teamwork and aims to optimize the Health & Performance department by integrating new technologies to adapt to the evolving nature of soccer.
Hailing from Barcelona, Spain, Rodríguez brings over 17 years of experience in professional soccer, having worked with esteemed clubs like Liverpool FC and Real Valladolid, as well as Liga MX’s Santos Laguna. His career has also included providing care for athletes in high-profile competitions such as the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, and the Olympic Games.
Orlando City SC will next face Charlotte FC at Inter&Co Stadium for Round One of the Audi 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs on Sunday, Oct. 27, with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET, available on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV and FS1.
