Morsani College Of Medicine Welcomes Newest Future Doctors

Late July is an exciting period for the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine, as they welcome their newest class of medical students. On July 29, 130 first-year students of the Class of 2028 embarked on their medical school journey at Morsani College of Medicine.

Under the leadership of Edwing Daniel, PhD, the admissions team reviewed thousands of applications to select this remarkable class. The Class of 2028 is the most academically accomplished yet, with a median MCAT score of 520, placing them in the top 3% nationwide. These students come from diverse backgrounds and have a wide range of interests, including athletics, gardening, and music.

Building Resilience And Success At Morsani College Of Medicine

Charles J. Lockwood, MD, MHCM, executive vice president of USF Health and dean of Morsani College of Medicine, spoke to the new students, referencing the book "The Obstacle is the Way." He emphasized the importance of turning challenges into opportunities, both in medical school and in their future careers. Dr. Lockwood highlighted the significance of resilience and adaptability in achieving success and positive patient outcomes.

“Uncomfortable and risky situations should always be seen as opportunities to learn,” Dr. Lockwood advised. “You’re very well qualified. You can do this. We know you have the brains, talent, drive, and persistence to do this. Good luck to all of you.”

Over the next two weeks, the Class of 2028 will acclimate to their new roles during Professions of Health. Their first major milestone will be the White Coat Ceremony on September 6 at the Tampa Convention Center, where they will receive their first white coats.
