Full job description
General Summary: A nonexempt position responsible for administering radiopharmaceuticals to patients for diagnostic purposes. May also perform radioimmunoassay studies.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
- Explains test procedures to patients and prepares dosages of radio-pharmaceuticals.
- Administers radiopharmaceuticals to patients by mouth, injection, inhalation, or other means. Positions patients on table or special chair. Adheres to safety standards that keep the radiation dose to patients and workers as low as possible.
- Starts a gamma scintillation camera, or scanner, which creates images of the distribution of a radiopharmaceutical as it localizes in, and emits signals from, the patient’s body. Operates the camera to detect and map the radioactive drug in the patient’s body to create diagnostic images.
- Monitors the characteristics and functions of tissues or organs in which the drugs localize to determine the presence of disease on the basis of biological changes rather than changes in organ structure.
- Produces the images on a computer screen or on film for a physician to interpret.
- Keeps patient records and records the amount and type of radionuclides received, used, and discarded.
- Performs radioimmunoassay computerized studies as requested that assess the behavior of a radioactive substance inside the body to determine levels of hormones or of therapeutic drugs in the body.
Education: High school diploma. Successful completion of nuclear medicine technology program leading to an associate's or bachelor’s degree.
Experience: Minimum two years of experience as nuclear medicine technician, preferably in medical practice setting.
Other Requirements: Most states require certification or licensure. Certification is available from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) and from the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board.
Performance Requirements:
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of the physical sciences, biological effects of radiation exposure, radiation protection and procedures.
- Knowledge of radiopharmaceuticals, imaging techniques, and computer applications.
- Knowledge of safety, infection control, quality assurance, and confidentiality regulations.
Skills:
- Skill in sensitively understanding patients’ physical and psychological needs.
- Skill in paying attention to details and in following instructions.
- Skill in administering radiopharmaceuticals and in operating camera and computer for imaging.
Abilities:
- Ability to explain the procedure to patients in calm, accurate manner.
- Ability to position patient and operate equipment effectively using mechanical abilities and manual dexterity.
- Ability to interact effectively with physicians and other clinicians as a team member.
Equipment Operated: Imaging equipment including cameras and computers. Special tables/chairs for positioning patients. Safety equipment including shielded syringes, gloves, and other protective devices. Technologists wear badges that measure radiation levels.
Work Environment: Potential for radiation exposure is minimal because of safety precautions. Some exposure to communicable diseases and other conditions related to medical environment.
Mental/Physical Requirements: Physical stamina needed because technologists are on their feet much of the day and may lift or turn disabled patients. May be required to lift/turn up to 100+ pounds. Stress related to dealing with anxious patients and need to be accurate and safe.
