Recent developments in Florida have brought a notable increase in dengue fever cases, raising concerns about this mosquito-borne disease. According to the Florida Department of Health, there have been eleven confirmed cases, with Broward County accounting for two and Miami-Dade reporting nine.

It's worth highlighting that, while dengue fever typically originates from regions beyond Florida, a locally acquired case was reported in Miami-Dade just last week. This emphasizes the importance of comprehending this viral ailment.

Dengue Fever: An In-Depth Look

Dengue fever, often colloquially referred to as "break-bone fever" due to the severe pain it induces, is transmitted to humans through mosquito bites. While some individuals may not display any symptoms, others might experience a mild illness that usually resolves within 1 to 2 weeks. Unfortunately, for certain cases, the infection can progress to severe dengue, a grave condition that may necessitate hospitalization.

Symptoms Of Dengue

Roughly 25% of those infected with the dengue virus exhibit symptoms that can vary from mild to severe. Around 5% of the affected individuals may develop severe dengue, which can lead to shock, internal bleeding, and even fatality. The most prevalent symptom is fever, frequently accompanied by:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Skin rash
  • Body aches and pains, including pain behind the eyes

Symptoms typically manifest within 4 to 10 days after infection and persist for a duration of 2 to 7 days, in accordance with guidance from the World Health Organization (WHO).

Apart from these typical symptoms, there are warning signs that might signal severe dengue:

  • Abdominal pain and tenderness
  • Frequent vomiting (at least three times in 24 hours)
  • Bleeding from the nose or gums
  • Vomiting blood or discovering blood in stool
  • Feelings of extreme fatigue, restlessness, or irritability

If you or a family member encounter these warning signs, it's crucial to seek immediate medical attention at a local clinic or emergency room. These symptoms usually emerge within 24 to 48 hours after the onset of fever, as advised by the CDC.

Treat And Prevent Dengue Fever

There is no specific medication for treating dengue fever, but in most cases, symptoms can be managed at home using pain relievers like acetaminophen, in line with recommendations from the WHO. However, a vaccine known as Dengvaxia is available for individuals who have previously contracted dengue and reside in high-risk areas.

Dengvaxia is the sole dengue vaccine approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and recommended for regular use by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, as detailed by the CDC. Introduced in 2022, it is accessible to children and adolescents aged 9 to 16 in dengue-endemic regions, encompassing American Samoa, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The most effective approach to ward off dengue fever is by taking measures to prevent mosquito bites:

  • Utilize insect repellent
  • Don loose-fitting, long-sleeved attire

Opt for insect repellents containing active ingredients such as DEET, IR3535, Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE), or Picaridin, as recommended by the CDC and WHO.

Please be aware that certain repellents are unsuitable for young children, as DEET is not recommended for those under 2 months old, while lemon eucalyptus oil should not be applied to children under 3 years old.

Additionally, it is vital to remove stagnant water sources in your home or yard, as mosquitoes frequently use these areas for laying their eggs. Research indicates that these steps are among the most effective ways to mitigate the mosquito threat.

With the rise in dengue fever cases in Florida, it is imperative to raise awareness and adopt proactive preventive measures to protect public health. Stay informed and take the necessary steps to safeguard yourself and your loved ones from this mosquito-borne ailment.
