If you ever want to hear the sound of crickets, try asking a room full of physicians how many of them have downloaded and viewed their QRUR report from Medicare? While that may be slightly overstated, the reality is a large number of physicians remain unaware of potential penalties that may be forthcoming in 2018 from Medicare for their reporting and performance in 2016.

There is no reason for physicians to be blindsided however. The California Medical Association has published a comprehensive article detailing the implementation of the Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS) and Value-Based Modifier and what physicians can do today to view and take any necessary action on their QRUR report from Medicare.

The clock is ticking however.

Physicians who wish the challenge the findings in their QRUR report must submit an informal review request electronically through the Quality Reporting Communication Support Page by December 1, 2017, at 8 p.m., EST.

The cumbersome manner in which CMS will be notifying physicians of potential penalties is another reason why physicians will want to be pro-active in downloading their QRUR report.

As explained by the California Medical Association:

PQRS penalties will be communicated to physicians by mail as well as in the PQRS feedback reports posted on the CMS website. Value Modifier penalties can be found in the Quality and Resource Use Reports (QRUR), which are only posted on the website.
