Orange County Facing High Syphilis Rates

Syphilis occurrences in Orange County are soaring, ranking it among Florida's highest. As per Central Florida Public Media, national syphilis cases surged by 80% from 2018 to 2022, with Florida witnessing a 62% increase during the same period. Remarkably, Orange County contributed nearly 10% of all state cases in 2021.

Experts are puzzled by the significant surge in syphilis cases in Central Florida, a trend expected to persist. Although the exact cause remains elusive, medical professionals anticipate a continued uptick.

The CDC Is Highly Concerned About The Syphilis Spike

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) highlighted the concerning spike in syphilis cases from 2018 to 2022, particularly among newborns. This resurgence of the sexually transmitted disease has left health professionals baffled.

The surge isn't limited to Orange County; neighboring counties like Brevard have also witnessed significant increases. In Orange County, Black men have seen the sharpest rise in syphilis cases.

A 70% Increase

Dr. Jarod Fox, chair of the infectious disease department at Orlando Health, reports a steady influx of syphilis patients. Despite hopes for a plateau, Dr. Fox anticipates even higher case counts in 2023 and 2024.

Orange County's 70% increase in syphilis cases aligns closely with national trends. Dr. Fox emphasizes the rising cases of congenital syphilis, where infected mothers transmit the disease to their babies.

The exact reasons behind the surge remain unclear. Dr. Fox suggests that while overall STD rates stabilize, syphilis continues its upward trajectory. Lack of symptom recognition and treatment delays contribute to its spread.

The Various Forms Of Syphilis

Syphilis manifests in various symptoms, including painless ulcers, fever, fatigue, and patchy hair loss. Without treatment, the disease can progress to lethal stages, affecting major organs such as the brain.

Prevention through abstinence remains the surest method, though using protection can mitigate risks. Dr. Fox stresses the importance of testing and seeking medical attention promptly for those suspecting exposure to syphilis.

The alarming rise in syphilis cases underscores the urgent need for awareness and proactive measures to curb its spread in Orange County and beyond.
