Last week, the Orange and Seminole County Medical Societies held an extremely engaging Legislative Roundtable with several members of the Florida Legislature. Those in attendance had an opportunity to take a deep dive into some of the health care challenges facing our state as the 2018 Florida Legislative Session looms. The audience engaged in dialogue over a number of issues including advancing Direct Primary Care models in Florida, promoting wider insurance coverage of out-patient mental health services, and how to appropriately balance the legitimate need for pain management for our patients versus the growing opioid crisis in our communities.

We would like to thank those legislators that were able to participate in our roundtable: Representative Amy Mercado; Representative Mike Miller; and Representative Scott Plakon. Each of them illustrated their understanding of these important issues and their dedication to our community and patients.

Our organizations are proud to provide a platform for physician leaders in our region to directly impact the health of our community through our advocacy efforts. While the Legislative Session does not start until January, Committee hearings are already underway in Tallahassee and we are actively participating in debates that will shape our future.
