UCF Medical School Students to Begin Classes This Fall

Lake Nona's medical city is emerging not only as Orlando's fastest-growing, most innovative master-planned community encompassing 7,000 acres, but also as a "Project of Promise" featuring Nemours Children's Hospital, M.D. Anderson Orlando's Cancer Research Institute, Orlando VA Medical Center, University of Central Florida's new College of Medicine and Health Sciences campus, Burnham Institute for Medical Research's east coast campus, and a University of Florida research facility dotting the Lake Nona Gateway Interchange in the 600-acre Science & Technology Park.

Big Draws: Men and … Jeopardy!?

In 2008, Seminole Community College (SCC) made plenty of noise in the medical community. The school's nursing program saw an influx of male students, thanks to Partners for a Healthy Community (PHC)'s catchy campaign "Are You Man Enough to be a Nurse?" that kicked off last April during the men's NCAA basketball finals to address Central Florida's nursing shortage.

Expanded Facility Serves Southwest Orlando Community

Just before Thanksgiving, clinicians began treating inpatients in the new Dr. P. Phillips Hospital tower on Turkey Lake Road in southwest Orlando. The hospital, part of Orlando Health, added capacity for 142 additional patient rooms and enhanced medical services.

Low Ranking on Par with Other Southern States

In a state-by-state comparison, the people of Florida ranked 6th least healthy in the nation, according to America's Health Rankings, a report put out annually by United Health Foundation. The results squared Florida on par with its Southern-state contemporaries ranked most unhealthy as a region.

E-Prescribing in the Medicare Program

Bonus Potential but Ultimate Penalty

Electronic prescribing was enacted as part of the Medicare Improvements for Patients & Providers Act of 2008 (MIPPA) passed by Congress July 15, 2008. E-Prescribing in the legislation provides for a bonus for compliance initially, but eventually a penalty if you are not "successfully" prescribing.

Seminole County Health Department and the Dental Care Access Foundation Work Together Providing Dental Care to Seminole County Residents
The Seminole County Health Department's (SCHD) Dental Program focuses mainly on preventive care for children with Medicaid and on a more limited basis adults with dental emergencies have been referred by the local hospitals and sponsored by Seminole County Community Assistance. The expansion of the state of the art Casselberry facility in 2006 has increased capacity significantly.
